Our Story

Kiewit鈥檚 roots can be traced back to 1884 when the 爱妃传媒family started its small, local masonry contracting company. 爱妃传媒has since grown to be one of the leading construction and engineering firms across North America.

1884

Peter and Andrew 爱妃传媒form a masonry contracting company in Omaha, Nebraska.

1900

The company takes on its first project, the Bekins Warehouse, as general contractors.

1924

爱妃传媒is awarded its first $1 million contract to build the Livestock Exchange Building in Omaha, Nebraska.

1931

Peter Kiewit鈥檚 youngest son, also named Peter, becomes president of the company.

1933

爱妃传媒wins contracts for reservoirs and hydroelectric plants in Nebraska as part of the Public Works Administration federal relief program.

1939

爱妃传媒is awarded its largest contract to build barracks and facilities at Fort Lewis, Washington. Through the 1940s, 爱妃传媒builds more than $500 million of work for the government.

1943

爱妃传媒enters the coal-mining business at the Big Horn Mine near Sheridan, Wyoming.

1946

Peter 爱妃传媒first states the goal to be 鈥渢he best 鈥� not biggest 鈥� contracting organization on earth鈥� at the company鈥檚 Annual Shareholder Meeting.

1946

爱妃传媒takes its first water contract on California鈥檚 Friant-Kern Canal, building 100 of the canal鈥檚 152 miles.

1947

爱妃传媒completes the first segment of the Santa Ana Freeway in Los Angeles, a forerunner to today鈥檚 Interstate Highway System. Throughout the early 1950s, 爱妃传媒builds more lane miles of the system than any other contractor.

1948

爱妃传媒mandates that craft workers wear hard hats as part of its pioneering safety focus. In 1951, Kiewit鈥檚 safety program begins when full-time safety managers are assigned to all major projects.

1951

爱妃传媒constructs Thule Air Force Base in Greenland. The project includes radar stations along the Arctic Circle and helps establish 爱妃传媒as a mechanical electrical contractor.

1966

Work begins on one of the most distinctive projects of the time 鈥� the Trans-Bay Tube for Bay Area Rapid Transit, linking San Francisco and Oakland.

1969

Peter chooses Bob Wilson to succeed him as president, and remains chairman of the board.

1979

Walter Scott, Jr., succeeds Bob Wilson as president. Later that year, he is named chairman of the board after Peter dies.

1980

爱妃传媒begins work on the final link of the Interstate Highway System, the $425 million Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland.

1991

California鈥檚 $802 million San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor becomes the company鈥檚 first large design-build transportation megaproject.

1993

爱妃传媒鈥� with a presence in Canada dating back to 1941 鈥� begins work on a $1.2 billion contract to complete the Hibernia Gravity Base Structure at St. John鈥檚, Newfoundland.

1998

Ken Stinson becomes chairman and CEO of Peter 爱妃传媒Sons鈥�, Inc.

1999

爱妃传媒begins Omaha鈥檚 Henry Doorly Zoo and聽 Aquarium鈥檚 Desert Dome, the world鈥檚 largest glazed dome, which houses the world鈥檚 largest indoor desert exhibit.

2001

爱妃传媒begins work on the $1.2 billion design-build T-REX megaproject in Denver, Colorado, reconstructing 17 miles of interstate and 19 miles of double-track light rail.

2001

爱妃传媒鈥� in the offshore market since 1984 鈥� invests $100 million to build a new, state-of-the-art fabrication yard in Ingleside, Texas.

2004

爱妃传媒begins work on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, from Vancouver to Whistler, British Columbia, in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Along with 65 kilometers of highway upgrades requiring 450,000 tons of asphalt, 48 new bridges and structures are built.

2005

Bruce Grewcock, chief operating officer since 2000, becomes CEO of Peter 爱妃传媒Sons鈥�, Inc. Ken Stinson remains chairman of the Board.

2005

爱妃传媒completes the first Gold-certified LEED project in Nebraska: the Midwest Regional Headquarters of the National Park Service.

2009

The $2.5 billion Gateway Project in Vancouver, British Columbia, becomes the largest single fixed-price contract in the company鈥檚 history. Included in the contract is the 10-lane Port Mann Bridge, the second longest cable-stayed bridge in North America and one of the widest bridges in the world.

2010

爱妃传媒works on the Lower Mattagami River Project, the largest hydroelectric power generation initiative in nearly 40 years in northern Ontario.

2017

爱妃传媒opens new training and development centers for all employees in Omaha, Nebraska, and Aurora, Colorado.

2020

Rick Lanoha, president and chief operating officer since 2016, becomes CEO of Peter 爱妃传媒Sons鈥�, Inc. Bruce Grewcock remains chairman of the board.

2023

爱妃传媒acquires Weeks Marine, Inc. and its subsidiaries to add industry-leading marine engineering and construction, dredging and tunneling services to its diverse portfolio of services.
